Project Overview
The Green Line Extension project is a significant infrastructure development in the Boston metropolitan area. It involves extending the existing Green Line light rail system into the communities of Somerville and Medford. This expansion aims to improve access to public transportation for residents in these areas, reduce traffic congestion, and promote sustainable transportation options. The project includes the construction of new stations, track, and infrastructure, as well as the integration of the extension with the existing Green Line system.
The Green Line Extension is a light rail transit (LRT) project that extends the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA) Green Line light rail system into the northern suburbs of Boston, Massachusetts. It adds 4.7 miles of new track, six new stations, and a new vehicle maintenance facility. The project was completed in two phases: the Union Square Branch opened in March 2022, and the Medford Branch opened in December 2022. The Green Line Extension is expected to serve approximately 50,000 daily riders and provide a much-needed transportation link for the growing communities of Somerville and Medford.
